When Hollywood meets Jordan!

Welcome to OUTstanding Jordan

Beyond the beautiful and breathtaking views, this country is a very common movie set that you didn't even know! Many movies were shot in the luscious dessert and amazing nature that Jordan has to offer. Some films depict the place like earth, some as another planet, some for adventure and some for fantasy, either way, it truly is a miraculous place that also is so worth seeing beyond the silver screen.

Lawrence of Arabia | 1962

A movie based on Thomas Edward Lawrence who was a British liaison officer during the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Turks in the years between 1916 and 1918. Lawrence himself wrote an autobiographical book and based on that book, David Lean made a movie. The movie takes place mostly in the Wadi Rum desert, which by the real Lawrence was his favorite place. It is truly a spectacular place to witness. Not only this movie is a great historical piece but also it shows some of the wonderful places that you must visit in Wadi Rum. Places such as the Seven Pillars of Wisdom, the Ain Shalaleeh spring where you may hike and witness the beautiful views of the Rum village and the valley, the Lawrence spring which is located in the Khazali canyon and named after Lawrence of Arabia himself, and the Lawrence house which has also fantastic views!

The Martian | 2015

The science fiction movie The Martian, starring Matt Damon and Kristen Wigg is a great example of the usage of the totally out of this world scenery of Wadi Rum desert. To imagine that this location was used in most of the film as the planet Mars is truly astounding. The astronaut Mark Watney, portrayed by Matt Damon was left behind on planet Mars and was presumed to be dead, with little supplies he was forced to find ways to survive on the hostile planet. The movie boxed in over 600 million in the box office, and has amazing shots of the wonderful desert Wadi Rum, so if you are visiting Jordan, you might feel a little bit out of this world!

Aladdin | 2019

The remakes of the classic Aladdin Disney movie from 1992, starring Will Smith, came out just recently and praises the beauty of the desert of Wadi Rum. The Disney movie id a huge production and of course a great nostalgic movie with lots of cinema beauty, wit' special effects and great cast ( I mean Will Smith as the genie?!). The backdrop for this movie is also amazing, the gorgeous Wadi Rum desert, and it is such a great contribution to the cinema world and international relations.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade | 1989

We all know and love the amazing adventures of Indiana Jones, and this is the third movie in the series wherein this Indiana Jones sets out to rescue his father. Starring Harrison Ford and Sean Connery and directed by Steven Spielberg, this action and adventure movie is a classic and a true adventure! With many amazing locations in the movie, Jordan was a big part as well, one of the famous locations in the movie is Petra, a beautiful ancient city that stands until today. Even though the movie was shot all over the world, the last scene in the temple was shot in the actual temple in Petra, so it wasn't too far-fetched from the truth!

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen | 2009

The sequel to the 2007 movie and of course remake of the 1980's cartoon, starring Shia LeBeouf and Megan Fox and directed by the one and only Michael Bay, is an action-filled movie where the main character Sam Witwicky (Shia LeBeouf) returns to the simple life, however, the cryptic signs that he starts seeing immediately put him in-between a huge Transformers war between the autoboots and Decepticons. As nerdy as that sounds, this movie is awesome, filled with action and humor. The location where supposedly is Egypt (in the storyline) is shot in Jordan, partly in Wadi Rum and in Petra, so don't let Michael Bay fool ya!

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story | 2017

Hey there Star Wars fans! We know you are out there, and maybe you didn't know this but this movie features Wadi Rum as Jedha- one of the first civilizations to explore the nature of the Force. Ok sounds a bit geeky, but here is another great usage of the beautiful and out of this world location and depicting it as a different planet or a fantasy place. Some say it is the sequel to The Force Awakens, however, the storyline is actually between the events of Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope, which is kind of a prequel to the 1977 movie. Ok that is a lot of Star Wars information but hey, if you are a true fan then you know what we're talking about, and therefore you must visit Wadi Rum!

These are some blockbusters and more known movies that were shot in Jordan, however, there are dozens of smaller, independent and international movies that were filmed in the beautiful desert of Wadi Rum, the magical ruins of Petra and other villages and cities around this amazing country.
